Teoh Poh Yew is a dynamic and creative Mathematics educator who firmly believes that everyone can learn and enjoy this “dreaded” subject. She taught Secondary school Mathematics for 11 years and now she is an independent teacher trainer. Her major interest is to transform Mathematics into a tool to develop creativity, enhance mathematical thinking and sharpen problem solving abilities. She inspires students to approach this subject with confidence and enthusiasm.

Teoh Poh Yew is also a very experienced international trainer in the fields of creativity, maths education and training of trainers’ programmes. Always innovative and enthusiastic, Poh Yew captivates the audience with her boundless energy and her unique magical approach in training.

She conducts extremely innovative workshops for corporate leaders, teachers, trainers, parents and students in 16 countries around the world such as Malaysia, Singapore, China, Bulgaria, Denmark, United States, Germany, India, etc. She is the founder of “Creative Maths” (a licensed programme) which is now available in Malaysia, Singapore and Australia. She has also published 3 books on mathematical magic. She appears regularly on TV, radio, magazines and newspapers to share her experiences.

 

Introduction:
This is a fun filled, hands-on and minds-on workshop on creativity in Maths Education. It will be conducted in a workshop format with 5 to 6 participants in a group. Participants will also be given a chance to share their own creative teaching approaches to their fellow participants. This Magical Workshop on Creativity in Maths Education aims to help teachers appreciate the true nature of mathematics. Special emphasis will be on the development of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). It also aims to help them realise that helping students to learn maths can be such fun with some creative magic touch.

Objectives:
At the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
– recognise the importance of creativity
– describe five elements of creativity
– identify the barriers to creativity
– facilitate the learning of mathematics creatively using some mathematical magic, games, and puzzles
– explore the possibilities of using the same magic/puzzle/games to inspire students of different grades and varying levels of ability for different learning objectives
– recognise maths problems that can develop students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)
– cater for the need of gifted children by providing them challenging questions
– motivate reluctant learners using the following approaches:
1. helping them to set goals and planning for success
2. coaching them according to their ability
3. giving them chances to show their ability in the class
4. recognising their potential/talent in other areas
– make a paradigm shift from catering for basic and performance need to catering for students’ excitement need (Kano Model) in Maths Education
